Abstract

AI answers can repeat stale prices, locations, product capabilities, policies, and market claims when public sources remain outdated. This paper proposes a maintenance model based on the rate and consequence of factual change rather than a universal publishing calendar.

Definition

First Brand defines content freshness as the continued accuracy and relevance of the material facts on a page. Freshness is not the date displayed at the top of an article. A page can be old and accurate, or recently edited and still wrong. The correct review interval depends on how quickly the underlying fact changes and the cost of being wrong.

Method

Classify facts into four clocks: real-time facts such as availability, operational facts such as locations and policies, product facts such as features and packaging, and durable knowledge such as definitions and methods. Assign each class a review owner, evidence source, review interval, and update trigger. Record material revisions in a change log.

Findings

Fast-changing facts need structured sources and tighter governance. Durable research may need less frequent revision but should still disclose its publication date and method. Mechanical date changes add little value because they do not show what changed. The strongest refresh adds new evidence, corrects a fact, improves the method, or updates the decision context.

How to apply the framework

Create a freshness register for priority pages. Connect launches, price changes, policy changes, and market expansion to content tasks. Update the canonical owned source first, then product feeds, profiles, partner pages, and research references. Submit updated URLs through established discovery channels and monitor whether old facts persist in tracked prompts.

Limitations

Crawl and index timing are controlled by external systems. A sitemap or recrawl request can support discovery, but neither guarantees immediate indexing or answer changes. Repeatedly changing a date without material improvements can also reduce trust. The maintenance model improves the quality of the source environment, not the speed of every downstream update.
